Final Concentration Portfolio

Water / Ocean

Concentration: I have a really weird obsession with watching water. I could just sit and stare at it. So for my Concentration Portfolio, I decided to photograph that obsession. It's not just water when you look at it, it's the way the water reacts. Whether it's reacting to the tide or objects in it. Basically, all of these photos focus on water, yet they aren't JUST water. That's why it's kinda hard to specifically title my portfolio. So it's a collection of ocean/beach/and water photos that I am proud of.

Photo of the Week 5/26/14 - 5/30/14

Reflection: I really like this picture. Taken at the IB pier, I'm totally ok with his head kind of being cut off. I love the way the water is splashing in front of the surfer. I actually like the way the head isn't in the shot.

Photo of the Week 5/19/14 - 5/23/14

Reflection: I took a couple versions of this picture. First, I took one where the clouds behind the car are much lighter. But then I took one where you could see the darkness mixed with the blue sky. I like this one much better because I like the way the sky is focused as well as the type on the mirror and the reflection on the back window. It's hard to explain, all the reasons I like this photo but I really do. Also, the clouds in the sky ( in the mirror ) look almost blended with the clouds on the back window which I think looks really cool.

Photo of the Week 5/12/14 - 5/16/14

Reflection: I took this in the parking lot next to the Staples Center. I really like taking pictures of cool cars. I saw this bug and took a picture but then I took one with the flash. The flash on this picture makes the car look brighter (obviously) but also changes the mood. Instead of a dirty grungy car, its a old time vintage car. I am really happy with this photo, the only thing is the other cars are in the background but that's something I can't control.

Photo of the Week 5/5/14 - 5/9/14

Reflection: When I took this photo, I was waiting specifically for the waves to hit the rocks and bounce back. For some reason I'm just really obsessed with watching water. I love the blue in the water mixed with the grey/neutral tone of the pole and barnacles, enhanced by the white in the sea foam. (You know what I mean by sea foam.) I am just really intrigued by this.

4-In-1 Portraiture

Top Left: Golfer Sam // Paramount/Butterfly Lighting
Top Right: Team Fan Sam // Loop Lighting
Bottom Left: Dark/ Emo Sam // Split Lighting
Bottom Right: Everyday/ Surfer Sam // Rembrant Lighting

Reflection: It wasn't difficult to set up the lights, it just didn't make a super strong difference to me like it did on the example sheet. Next time I would experiment in different ways with the amount of lights I have on. I don't have a favorite really, but if I had to pick one, I guess I think it would be the Team Fan picture. I just like the brightness and how she isn't washed out, yet her face is extremely bright.

Photo of the Week 4/28/14 - 5/2/14

Reflection: This was so spontaneous. I was playing with the camera in the car on the way out of downtown Los Angeles and I took this and the shutter stopped taking the picture so I moved and then it finished taking. I looked at it and I thought it was so cool! I had the shutter speed really slow and the flash on. I know it was a mistake picure but it really interests me and I like how the color streaks are all of the warm group.

Photo of the Week 4/21/14 - 4/25/14

Reflection: I started out taking a picture WITH the flower and then I thought I should take a picture OF the flower. I looked at the ground and saw this little hole in the concrete. I thought it would be an interesting idea to put the flower sitting in the hole. I like this photo because of the balance of texture. There's chips and uneven parts in the sidewalk, but the flower petals are soft so I believe it balances it out nicely. Even though it isn't very colorful, I love it's simplicity.

Photo of the Week 4/14/14 - 4/18/14

Reflection: I took this last Saturday at the San Diego Neon Run and I automatically knew it would be my Photo of the Week. I loved how the powder was scattered so I had to capture the moment. I also loved the point of view. Because it was a spontaneous picture, I couldn't plan the people in the shot, which is why I caught some movement. I just really love the POV and the different colors, especially on the shoes. I really love how the colors are kinda in clumps, dots on the ground. I wish that the movement wasn't there, but I also think it adds some interesting aspects to the picture.

Photo of the Week 4/7/14 - 4/11/14

Reflection: I took this picture in the fall because I liked looking at the texture of the branches. I couldn't really tell if it was a dead bush or just a intertwined pile of sticks/branches. I went closer to them to make them fill the frame so it could not only look cleaner, but so you could really see how every branch goes over or under another. I still really like this picture.

Narrative: School Stress

Reflection: I actually can't pick a favorite out of these because I like them all. My theme besides school stress is that you can't see the people's faces. I decided to have their faces covered, so you could realize that you don't have to see someone's face, to figure out their emotions.

Optical Illusion

Theme: Sky
Theme: Nature
Theme: Tourist
Theme: Other (Because I like it)

Reflection: My favorite pictures are the sky writings and Jess putting her hands around the moon. But my absolutle favorite is the one with the plane streak going into Jess' mouth. I think it's really fun. I really enjoied this project. I was originally trying to make it look like Jess was in a bottle, but I had some trouble because the botttle was green and I wasn't sure how to focus it so you could see Jess and clearly see the bottle. It's something I'll have to work on and experiment with.

Reflection: I think my best photos were the one of the Manta Ride, Journey To Atlantis, Soozy jumping and the dog. I wish I took more of panning. That was definitely the hardest one for me.
